Fellowships

CGPH Student Summer Fellowship
As a part of CGPH's mission, a graduate student fellowship to support international research has been established. Under this fellowship, an award up to $5,000 will be made to qualified students to support international travel and research activities at one of the approved faculty project research sites abroad.

CEND Science & Engineering for Global Health Fellowship
The CEND fellowship program provides short-term summer research experiences at selected sites in developing countries for Berkeley science and engineering doctoral and postdoctoral researchers. Equipped with first-hand knowledge of the complexity of health in the developed world, Berkeley students will develop new insights and approaches to the disease systems that they study. Competition for the fellowship opens in January of each year.

Framework for Global Health Postdoctoral Fellowship
The Framework Fellowship for Global Health is a new postdoctoral training program awarded to UC Berkeley and UCSF by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Fogarty International Center. The program provides six months of funding for PhD or MD postdocs from disciplines traditionally not involved in "global health". Funded projects must be related to drug-resistance in Brazil, India, South Africa, or another emerging economy country.

Global Health Disparities Fellowship
The Global Health Disparities Research Fellowship at UC Berkeley funds international summer research experiences for Berkeley students from under-represented minorities and other communities suffering health disparities. The program provides training in infectious disease research, with a focus on diseases that disproportionately affect people in developing countries. The fellowship is administered jointly by CEND and the Biology Scholars Program.

Wiesenfeld Graduate Fellows
The Irving Wiesenfeld Graduate Student Support Fund provides research funds for UC Berkeley graduate students engaged in neglected infectious disease research. Each year, a single graduate student is selected for this prestigious award.

Big Ideas: Neglected Disease Competition

Currently, only 10 percent of global health R&D is devoted to diseases that affect 90 percent of the world's population. This contest awards student proposals that answer the question, "What could and should UC Berkeley, working with other Bay Area research institutions such as UCSF, do to combat these and other diseases?"

CEND Screening Competition
This community research competition aims to identify new drug targets for neglected diseases. It is held annually and is open to doctoral students, postdocs, faculty and research staff at any non-profit research institution in the San Francisco Bay Area.
