Xiamen University

Institute:
Founded in 1921 by Tan Kah Kee, a prominent Chinese businessman and philanthropist who lived overseas, the university has over 37,000 students, including over 2,000 international students. The School of Life Sciences at Xiamen University was founded in November 1999. The school has over 100 faculty, and offers courses in biology, biotechnology, and ecology.

Host Investigator:
Dr. Rui-chuan Chen is a professor in the School of Life Sciences at Xiamen University who also spent three years as a visiting scholar at the University of California, Berkeley in the department of Molecular and Cell Biology. He has been collaborating with Dr. Qiang Zhou at UC Berkeley to elucidate the mechanism by which the HIV-encoded Tat protein and its host cellular cofactor P-TEFb cooperate to stimulate HIV transcription at the stage of elongation.

UC Berkeley Investigator:
Dr. Qiang Zhou has been a professor at the University of California, Berkeley since 1997. He is studying the mechanisms and factors that control transcriptional elongation and how this control affects HIV replication, tumorigenesis, and the cellular decision between growth and differentiation.
