Program Summary
The MHIRT program will train UC Berkeley and international students in infectious disease research, by funding short-term research experiences outside the U.S. for undergraduate or doctoral students. Each year for 5 years, the grant will provide 2-3 months of support for 8 student research projects, to be conducted at a university in a foreign country, with co-mentoring by UC Berkeley faculty members and their international collaborators. One of the objectives of this program is to recruit Berkeley students who come from minority or under-represented backgrounds (including African, Hispanic and Native Americans, plus 'first generation' college students) into international health research. Another goal is to strengthen Berkeley's ties with top universities abroad.
