Makerere University

Institute:
Makerere University is Uganda’s premiere research university, with Schools of Medicine and Public Health that are co-located with Mulago Hospital in Kampala. The Medical School’s laboratory facilities were recently updated with the building of a new Infectious Diseases Institute, which carries out clinical trials and observational research focused on HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment. The MU-UCSF Malaria Research Collaboration, headed by Professors Philip Rosenthal and Moses Kamya, maintains a clinical research center at Old Mulago Hospital, as well as administrative offices and a new molecular biology laboratory in the same complex. The School of Public Health facility includes classrooms, a seminar room, computer clusters with internet connection, and a resource center with scientific journals, textbooks, and other research materials. All of these facilities are available for students.

Host Investigator:
Dr. Moses Kamya

Dr. Moses Joloba

UCSF Investigator:
Dr. Philip J. Rosenthal is a Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. His laboratory has been engaged in basic malaria research since the late 1980's and in clinical studies of antimalarial drug efficacy and resistance in Uganda since the late 1990's. He has expanded his clinical and epidemiological studies in Uganda to add a molecular component. The focus of this work is to perform translational studies of antimalarial drug resistance.
His lab has also conducted immunological surveys of the host response to malaria, entomological surveys of the mosquito populations in Kampala, health economics studies of the impact of rapid diagnostic tests in remote field clinics; and many others. To complement his fieldwork, Dr. Rosenthal’s lab conducts biochemical research on malaria proteases as potential drug targets in a public-private partnership with GlaxoSmithKline.
